PRE-KINDERGARTEN AND KINDERGARTEN INFORMATION
DCS Pre-Kindergarten Program Update
Last year when we had to cut our Pre-Kindergarten program due to budgetary constraints, we also made it clear that we are committed to seeking funding through NYS in order to reinstate the program as soon as we are eligible to do so (which we believe will be for the 2018-2019 school year). However, we have to wait to see if NYS includes funding for the Universal Prekindergarten grant program in their budget, and wait for the applications to come out in order to apply. Over the past few years, this grant was not released until late June or later. As a result we will not know with certainty if we will be able to offer a program until sometime this summer at the earliest.
In the meantime, as a district, we are gathering all the necessary information that we will need in order to submit an application as soon as it becomes available, and we need your help. One of the most important pieces of information that we will need is the number of eligible students that we have in our district. If you have a child that will turn four on or before December 1, 2018, please contact Mrs. Newkirk in the elementary office as soon as possible. You can reach her via email at email@example.com or call 315-852-3400 ext. 7122. If emailing please provide us with the following information:
We will contact you with updates on the process as we move through the process. Our plan will be to start our program back up as soon as we can if/when we receive funding. Sending us your information does not obligate you to enroll your child in the program, but will allow you to receive information as soon as it becomes available. We will also keep you on our mailing list for Kindergarten enrollment information for the following year.
- Parent/guardian name(s)
- Street address and Mailing address if different
- Phone number where you can be reached
- Child’s name and Date of Birth
If you have any questions regarding the Pre-Kindergarten program and/or the process, please don’t hesitate to contact Kimberly O’Brien, Principal in the elementary office at the number above or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Seeking Kindergarten Students for 2018-2019
Will your child be five (5) on or before December 1, 2018? If so, he/she is eligible to attend Kindergarten this fall. If you haven’t already; please contact Linda Newkirk at 852-3400 extension 7122 to be added to our mailing list and sign up for a screening appointment. We will be screening incoming Kindergarten students in early-mid May.
Screening will take place at school in our library, and you should expect to be here for about an hour. During screening, your child will be engaged in several ‘stations’ with our teachers. The purpose of the screening is for us to start to get to know your child and learn more about his/her developmental level so that we can create balanced classes. Some parents worry about the screening process. We assure you that were are not ‘testing’ your child to see if they know certain things before they can enter Kindergarten. All students that will be five by December 1st are welcomed with open arms. To register your child for Kindergarten, please do the following:
- Contact Mrs. Newkirk in the elementary office (315-852-3400 ext. 7122) to have a registration packet sent to you and sign up for a screening appointment.
- Complete the registration paperwork and bring it (along with the following) to your screening appointment:
- A copy of your child’s birth certificate (you can bring the original and we will make a copy)
- Poof or Residency (utility bill, lease agreement, mortgage statement, tax bill, driver’s license with street address)
- Have your physician’s office forward both shot records and current physical (within one year of the start of school- please speak with our school nurse, Jessica Vadala, RN at ext. 7112 if you have any questions)
Please don’t hesitate to contact the elementary office (ext. 7122) if you have any questions. We look forward to having your family become a part of ours!
